The Lower School Student Services Team, launched in the 2024 to 2025 school year, works to improve how Student Support Services collaborate and serve students in counseling, enrichment, intervention, and the health office. Student Support Services provide students with the resources they need at their current level of learning and range from in-class supports to small group and individual intervention classes.
What began as a small group of educators meeting weekly over lunch has grown into an intentional effort focused on incorporating more positive experiences and coping spaces for all Lower School students. This includes the addition of the new Reset Room. Members of the team include Stephanie Bade, Math Intervention Specialist, Debbie Chinn, Grades 3-5 Enrichment Teacher, Sophia Spennewyn, Reading Intervention Specialist, and Jacki Steinkamp, Early Ed and Lower School Counselor.
“There’s a synergy in being part of a team in which we can work more efficiently towards solutions and increase what we’re able to offer to our students,” explains Student Services Committee member and Lower School Counselor, Jacki Steinkamp. The addition of the Lower School Student Services Team also eases the demand on teachers. “Instead of seeking out an individual, a teacher can talk to any member of the team,” states Jacki Steinkamp.
New this year, the Reset Room was created by the Lower School Student Services Team, in collaboration with the Early Education and Lower School principals, Dan Palkki and Christine DeBoer. Funding for the space came from money raised through the 2023 New Life Academy Auction.

The Reset Room gives students a space to ‘reset’ their brains and bodies. “It’s designed to help with emotional regulation, energizing a sleepy brain, cross-body movement, and meeting sensory needs,” Steinkamp explains. “Additionally, it can also serve as a quiet workspace.” The space includes picture books, flexible seating, a personal trampoline, a crawl-through tunnel, balance pods, sensory toys, and more, offering students a variety of ways to refocus.
As Lower School enrollment continues to grow, so does the need for intentional student support. “My team has recognized the importance of providing strong, purposeful care for the students we serve,” says Jacki Steinkamp. Lower School Principal Dan Palkki adds, “As our school continues to grow, so do our caseloads. We’ll need to make thoughtful adjustments to ensure we keep meeting the needs of our students and fulfilling our goals.”
The formation of our Student Support Team has enabled us to respond to student needs collaboratively and in partnership with families. I am incredibly proud of this team and the individuals who serve on it.
